TMC Foundation and KCS Foundation with the support of organizations like TMA, TMC Shipping, The KCS Group, MNOA, CMMI, The Caravel Group, 3 Bees Shipping, Fleet Management, Countywide Vacations organized Run for Seafarers Marathon on International Day of Seafarers to show support towards seafarers. The purpose of the marathon was to thank the seafaring community for all that they do to keep the world trade moving. The aim was also to appreciate their work and their contribution to the world economy as 90% of world’s trade is done with the help of Seafarers.
The marathon got a very good response from the people in and around Chandigarh. Approximately 800 people participated in the marathon. The registrations began at 4.30 a.m. During the registrations, participants were provided t-shirts and allotment numbers. People of all ages, from 10 years to 70 years ran in the Run for seafarers marathon.
Gauri Parashar Joshi, IAS, and D.C Panchkula Flagged off the rally at 5.45 a.m. The Marathon started from Chandimandir cantonment and ended at Sukhna Lake.
All the authorities and Police Administration cooperated and helped in making this marathon a success. The participants ran with full energy and high spirit.
Marathon ended around 7.30 a.m. After the marathon was finished, all the participants were thanked and given participation certificate. All the participants were tired and restless. Water and Refreshments were arranged for them. Medical facilities were taken care of by Max Health care.
The award ceremony took place in the presence of chief guests, Dinesh Mongia, a well-known cricketer and the legendary hockey player, Balbir Singh. Chief guests awarded the winners with prizes.
The participants were categorized into four groups i.e. general, seafarers, women and senior citizens. Sumit Kumar Gorai won the first prize of Rs. 51,000/- in general category. The second prize of Rs. 21,000/- was awarded to Sandeep. Mr. Parkash won the third prize of Rs. 11,000/- in this category.
In the women category Anjita, Ramanjot Kaur and Renu bagged first, second & third positions respectively. Under the ‘Beti Bachao Abhiyan’ Rs. 11000/- were awarded to each one of them. In the category of seafarers, the first position was won by Ajay Sharma and Anuj Syal stood second. Shemsher Singh won first prize and Sunita Malik bagged second position in the senior citizen category. The winners of seafarer and senior citizen categories were given holiday packages as prizes.
After bestowing the winners with prizes, Director of the TMC Foundation, Neeraj Kumar took over the stage and shared insights about careers in Merchant Navy. He said that opting for a career in Merchant Navy can help individuals combine a well-structured career path with clearly laid out promotions and professional growth. He further added that TMC shipping prepares students to make careers in Merchant Navy.
After the event bus service was provided to participants to help them return to the starting point where many of them had parked their vehicles.
The Run for Seafarers marathon ended on a good note. It was an overwhelming day reflecting the joy and spirit of the participants. TMC Shipping and The Maritime Academy are highly obliged to all the people who attended the event and gave it their support. This day proved yet again that people of Chandigarh are always supportive of a good cause.
