Importance of Flag States in the Shipping Industry

Flag state is the most important aspect of the Shipping Industry. It is the location of where a  ship is registered. Every shipping company needs to register their ship to a specific state. There ship is then restrained to work as per the rules and regulations imposed by the state. While the main task of ship companies and owners is to ensure the safe operations and management of their ships as well as safety and security of the crew members flag states ensures that the ship is bound to follow the rules and regulations related to certification, safety, inspection and pollution.

Ship operations and owners has the authority to choose the flag state and flag states can offer some incentives in order to attract them like low taxes, less registration fees and some other discounts. Since Flag state declaration of 1921, it has been identified that all states land locked nations (countries enclosed by land or coastlines lies on closed seas) have an authority to maintain a ship register and be a ships flag state.

The flag state came into existence  for the reason that it assist to understand the nationality of the ship members. It works as a visible proof that of the nationality bestowed by the state on the ships registered under its national law. The nation under which ships operate are known as flag state and the process of ship migration from one state to another is referred to as the FOC (Flag of Convenience).

For a shipping company to register their ship under the flag state it is essential to maintain high standards to safety and security and have the required maritime infrastructure and follow all the regulations recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). There are many advantages of a flag state registration while the most important one is the ships registered under it are needed to carry out  regular inspections to make sure that the it is following its shipping guidelines correctly.
